Race Description

The Mandan Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4984 proudly present the return of the Through the Smoke Road Race. The race will kick off at the Mandan Firefighters Training Grounds (Mandan Firefighters Training Grounds — 629 24th Ave. SE, Mandan, ND 58554) and wind through the Lakewood area of Mandan on June 6, 2026 at 9:00 AM.

Events include a family-friendly 5K (walkers, dogs, and strollers welcome), a competitive 5K and 10K, and a kids’ half-mile race for ages 10 and under.

All proceeds benefit the Mandan Firefighters by funding new fitness equipment and advanced training opportunities with leaders from across the United States. Access to proper fitness equipment and high-quality training supports both physical performance and mental resilience, helping firefighters manage stress, build confidence, and maintain long-term well-being. Supporting firefighter fitness and training helps ensure our crews are prepared to protect our community safely and effectively.

Family Activities & Spectator Fun

The starting area will feature a Kids Fire Safety Fun Zone, offering hands-on activities and education for children. Families and spectators are encouraged to cheer on all racers as they cross the finish line and enjoy the community atmosphere throughout the event.

What’s Included With Registration

Competitive Races (5K & 10K): Swag bag, event T-shirt (pre-registration recommended), finisher medal, race bib, professionally timed by Pickle Events.

Family Fun 5K: 1 Swag bag per group. 1 Event Tee Shirt per registered participant. $5.00 discount for each registered person in the group.

Awards

Awards will be given to the 1st place finisher in each age group, for both male and female divisions in the competitive races.

Competitive Age Groups: 19 & under | 20–29 | 30–39 | 40–49 | 50–59 | 60 & over

Kids 1/2-Mile Age Groups: 5 & under | 6–10 years

Through the Smoke Road Race is committed to serving the community by advancing physical fitness, mental resilience, operational readiness, and professional development within the fire service.

All proceeds from the event are dedicated to upgrading physical fitness equipment within the fire department and expanding opportunities for firefighters to participate in accredited training programs throughout the United States. Access to proper fitness resources and high-quality training plays a critical role in supporting mental health, stress management, and confidence on and off the job.

These investments directly support the health, safety, and long-term effectiveness of the fire department, helping ensure a strong and sustainable future for both current personnel and the next generation of firefighters entering the profession.
